The fridge is bare except for the beer bottles stocked up for the year-end partying. Damn, even the instant noodle supply is running low. After spending a quality Sunday with her Sweetheart, she decided to make a short detour to the 24-hr mini market on her way home to pick up some groceries and stock up on the usual essentials for her pad.
.
As she was debating on which canned tuna spread to put into her shopping cart, a guy at the same aisle turned around.
.
He : Excuse me, I am looking for a brand for tuna spread. Which brand is the local brand ah?
She : Erm…I guess AYAM brand is the safest. You can get TC Boy also but I personally prefer AYAM brand.
He : Oh ok…but erm…urm….
She : *waiting and after seeing him umm-ing for awhile, decided to be polite* What are you looking for actually? How can I help you?
He : Errmm…I dunno lah…..aahhh….
She : Ok, anyway. Here’r the choices you have. Think abt it and if you need any help, go ask any of the personnel around here. I am sure they are more than willing to help you. *walks away*
.
Bumped into him again at the fruit drinks aisle but politely kept her distance, thinking the dude’s a little…erm, weird?
.
20 mins later.
.
Paid for items and headed out to car. Saw same dude again at the entrance of the grocery store. Didn’t pay much attention to him cos was busy trying to remove the grocery bags from the cart and attempt a single trip to the car. As she was putting the last of the bags into the car’s backseat, the same dude walked up to her again.
.
He : Abt the AYAM brand tuna spread, you like that ah?
She : Erm, yes. *beginning to feel abit freaked out* Why?
He : Sorry….urm…actually, that was just an excuse to talk to you. Can we be friends? Can I have your number?
She : *Tots of maniacs flashing thru her mind* No, we cannot be friends and no you definitely cannot have my number cos you are freaking me out. Can you please stay away?
He : *looking lost* Oh? I am sorry….erm…didn’t mean to scare you…urm…
She : Yes, you did. Good nite.
.
She quickly got into her car and locked the door. As she drove away from the store, she sneaked a look at her rearview mirror and saw the guy still standing there at the curb. As she turned out of the main road and into the road that leads to her home, her eyes kept darting to the rearview mirror to ensure she wasn’t being followed.
.
Finally as she drove into her apartment compound and parked her car, she heaved a huge sigh of relief. Definitely no more late-evening grocery shopping for awhile.
.
As she sat down sipping her hot milk to unwind for the evening, her mind went back to the grocery store scene and she actually felt sorry for the dude. He did seem rather harmless and to his credit, didn’t try to push it when asked to keep his distance. He does, however, need to polish up his pick-up skills though. And try not to chat up a woman in the local grocery store at 11pm.
.
It’s just … freaky at worst, wrong at best.
