Me & My Mee Goreng

There are a few places one can go for mee goreng in Penang. Different folks will have different favourite places to satisfy their Mee Goreng craving. For me, there are 4 places worth mentioning.

.
Below list are in preferance order.

  1. Fort Cornwallis (more popularly known as Mee Sotong)
  2. Bangkok Lane
  3. Swatow Lane (more popularly known as Mee Sultan)
  4. Edgecumbe Road (currently operating from Gurney Drive)

*Click on each place above to read the write-ups of other folks. Just take note that the articles are reflecting the personal opinions of the authors. Best that you go try them yourselves to decide if you like them or not. I usually refer to the articles for the pix cos hey, what is one man’s meat is another man’s poison, rite?*
.
# 1 : For those who like their mee goreng a little sweet & spicy (like yours truly) and love sotong to bits, # 1 in the above list would be your # 1 too. :D I absolutely, absolutely LURVE the generous dollop of sotong they pile on top of the mee goreng! It’s a tad on the spicy side. So, if you are low on the spicidometer, best to tell the man at point of order to “Kurang Pedas, ya!”
.
# 2 : This used to be my favourite until I discovered # 1. If you are lucky and it’s the ori cook behind the wok, then the taste is good. If you are unlucky and got there on the day one of the helpers is goreng-ing the mee, then you will share vkeong’s sentiments about that place. One thing’s for sure, the performance of the cook (if he’s the one frying on that day) is one not to be missed! He loves to showcase his wok-spinning skills and his Hokkien-speaking skills. You may walk up to him going “Mee Goreng satu!” and he will go “Ok, ai nui boh?” (translated : Do you want eggs with it?). Quite an interesting makan experience.
.
# 3 : I have not patronised this stall in AGES. I’ve been told that the mamak stall has relocated to the fancy-looking ’New World Park’ nearby, just like the rest of the hawkers at Swatow Lane. Read about it here. Quite sad, I feel. The authenticity of eating by the roadside is gone. No longer will you see sights like this anymore. I hear they provide plastic utensils now at the new hawker center @ New World Park and I absolutely, absolutely HATE eating any food with plastic utensils! It’s not only hard to eat but the food somehow tastes crappier! Soon, this place will be struck off the mee goreng list of most foodies. To quote a galfren who is so damn good at dramatizing blogging expressions - *Kisah sedih*
.
# 4 : Alot of folks swear by this place, my dad being one of them. I personally find it a tad too spicy. Mind you, my spicidometer is rather high but I don’t really fancy feeling a thousand fire-ants in my mouth and in my tummy after a meal. So, I’d only go there if my dad has a huge hankering for it or any of my out-of-town friends bug me to take them there. Somehow, this place is featured in alot of food books/articles that draws in the visitors.
.
I’ll end this post with a picture taken at # 4. A particular hot chick had a sudden craving for it and practically begged me to take her there. Check out the saffrony-redness of the noodles.
.

.
Trust me, it’s spicier than it looks!

I love your post…reviewing the mee goreng in a different way…and I totally agree with you on the last photo - the mee goreng is spicier than it looks but your friend is hotter than the mee goreng…haha
