Thanks to a fellow foodie, I learnt that there is a place in BM (Bukit Mertajam) that serves good yam rice. Considering that the island is rather deprived of such delicacy (there are some yam rice stalls peppered all over the island but none has stood out taste-wise), I decided to check out this place over the weekend.
.
Armed with a map and directions from CK, 4 brave souls headed out of Penang island towards BM town. From the map, we learnt that we needed to drive towards the BM General Hospital as our destination is in its vicinity. Unfortunately, we were horribly-spoilt city kids and drove around in circles! We did finally locate the shop after awhile. *sheepish grin*
.
To ensure that others learn from our mistake, we decided to put a map together that clearly shows the direction to the shop. Just follow the red arrow.
.
.
This was the sight that greeted us as we walked into the shop.

I’ll only be doing the yummilicious food injustice if I share those grainy pix with you here. So, for good pictures of the food, I’ll have to point to CK’s post. Sorry CK, to jump onto your bandwagon but the pix I took of the food were really sucky. :(((
.
Final verdict : Definitely worth travelling all the way to BM for it again!
.
Next time, I will be taking my parents and some other family members there. For some strange reasons, the elders in my family lurrve yam rice. What more the ‘Kiam Chye Pork Soup’. Just thinking about it is making me salivate all over again! *droooool*
.
Oh, one thing I forgot….it totally slipped my mind to ask the owner which day of the week they are closed. Was too busy rubbing our tummies in contentment to ask the all-important question *blush*. Anyone knows?

Glad you like the food. You did a very impressive map showing the new location of the shop…definitely very useful for food hunters. Hope you don’t mind me updating my old article by linking to this useful map in your post.
CK,
My tiny, simple map is but a small appreciation for your selfless sharing of the BM yam rice discovery. So, yeah sure…go ahead to use it to update your own post.
Aiyor, I am surprised you never heard about the infamous Yam Rice in BM. As a BM girl myself I could have taken you there. Actually there are a few good ones. My fav is actually nearer to St Anne’s church while there is also a good one in a corner coffee shop outside Taman Sri Rambai and along Jln Padang Lallang. I love Yam Rice and Bak Kut Teh in BM! I should take you around BM town for some yummilicious treat when I go back!
Heya BM girl!!!
Yealah…me really ‘jakun’ when it comes to anywhere on the mainland mah. Born and bred (and spoilt) in Penang. What to do???
Ok, I will hold you to your words ah. Make sure you take me to all those yummy food in BM when you get back with that gorgeous bf of yours!
I sure will honey!
I just came back from the BM Yam Rice Shop you recommended.
Let me introduce another Yam Rice Shop at Chai Leng Park, Prai. This shop is called Soon leong. There are 3 Yam Rice Shops in a row. Soon Leong is in the centre. There is a drop in the standard compared to the old owner’s time. However, it is still able to put an alternative to the BM shop.
You enter the road opposite the side road of Pearl View Hotel.
Move along until the junction, turn right to the road at Wah Tong Restaurant.
Soon Leong is located at the middle section of this one-way street.
Thx Tionghua!
I’ll definitely head over to BM again on another yam rice hunt. The fact that the shop’s name is identical (word for word!) to my man’s chinese name is enough incentive for me to go try it out. :)))
Go, BM food!
Eleen
Chai Leng Park is in PRAI; NOT BM.
Many km nearer Penang. Just off the Penang Bridge. Obliquely opposite Pacific MegaMall.
The shop is at the 2nd road (one-way street)of those eating shops in front of the Parking Entrance to Pearl View Hotel.
*slap forehead*
In my haste to read your comment, I missed out the sentence abt the yam rice being in Prai. *face turn red red dee*
Yea, I heard abt the really good food in Prai. I am really hopelessly a city gal. Totally lost the minute I cross the Pg Bridge. Never mind. I will definitely find my way to Pearl View Hotel and then scout around for your recommended place.
Thx again!
Will let you know once I manage to find and try out this Soon Leong shop.
Remember to take ur Soon Leong along! Otherwise, he will jump on you…hahahha
Just the next road u have Kuan Nan Makan Shop. Try its economic rice add-ons such as Ayam Ros India and ayam gulai, prawn, sotong, etc.. wait, wait, it’s a Chinese atall. Very good tastes!
Happy eating….hahahha… Remember the English saying, “Eat Fat and Grow Thin!”
Wow, love your map… very nicely edited.
BM too far away for me leh…but maybe we can stop there when we make our next trip back to Penang sometime in the future…(if remember lah)
