Eight good friends packed into 2 cars to drive across the Penang Bridge to the mainland in search of some good, inexpensive food.
.
About 30 minutes after crossing the bridge, we saw this sign that also tells us that dinner is near.
.
.
After taking Exit 156, we drove another 10 minutes before reaching our destination. It’s a small coffee shop in the middle of Nibong Tebal (高渊) town. We saw lotsa folks sitting around coffee shops having their dinner. Someone (I think it was Dan) made an observation that folks in small towns have their dinners early, as in by 5-ish to 6-ish. City folks like us have our dinners late. 7ish at the earliest but usually 8-ish.
.
Dinner was :
- Tu Boh S’ng (Steamed Octopus), similar to the one they serve at Teow Chew Meng
- Deep fried kembung fish with freshly squeezed lemon juice.
- Steamed promphret
- Bamboo mussels
- Deep Fried Tiger Prawns
- Potato leaves fried with sambal
- Crab Porridge (the town’s speciality)
.
Here are some pictures of our dinner and the restaurant.

Either we were really hungry or the guys are really good eaters. We ordered ALOT of food (had some repeat orders too!) and yet, all that was left on the table by the time we raised the white flag was this…
.
*Note* A lot of empty plates were cleared to make room for more dishes to be served. These are just the empty plates from the final dish.
.
.
One would think that we’d all be too stuffed to have dessert. One would be sooooo wrong! The guys then started talking about where to head to for dessert. I was about to put up a brave protest - until someone mentioned the magic word : Baskin Robbins. It would be committing cardinal sin to say No to that. :\
.
So, off we drove to Juru Auto City in search of BR. A certain someone insisted, yes…INSISTED that there is a BR outlet in AutoCity. (U know who you are. :P) So, all 8 of us braved the huge crowd who was there to watch the vintage car parade and walked around searching for the sign below.
.
.
After some time walking around, we started cursing the AutoCity autorities for not having the brains to put up some kind of directory around that place. I mean, it’s a couple of blocks to walk around. And it’s annoying to walk down the entire block to find that the place we are looking for is not on that block. So, off we started again on a new block.
.
After awhile, we gave up and decided to ask one of the security guards. He pointed us to Swensen’s and to the below.
. .
No need any lucky guesses to know which one we picked.
.
One of the guys turned 30 this week. So, we made earlier plans to get him a birthday cake and celebrated his day after our NT makan-makan. We made so much noise laughing and talking that other customers were giving us weird looks. I think we will not be going back there anytime soon. Would most probably see posters of our faces crossed out at the door. Teehee…
.
Welcome to the club, Werner. The ride just keeps getting better and better from here on!
.
Pictures of the delirious friends after attacking the fondue. Someone blamed it on the sugar rush. I blame it on just plain ol’ FUN company.
.
.
Half of the gang had subsequent evening plans. So, we re-divided the group and 4 of us piled into our car to head back to the island. The remaining 4 decided to hang around AutoCity.
.
Some folks pissed me off just as we started the 2nd part of our Saturday night, but only for a short while. I refused to let them spoil my night. It started out perfect and I wanted it to end perfect. So, I just let the incident slide and enjoyed the company of some close friends and my Sweetheart.
.
By the time I crawled into bed, I think I saw the small hand on the clock pointing to 5. With a smile plastered on my face, I drifted off to sweet Dreamland.
.
Yes, it was indeed a perfect Saturday evening. Thanks, folks! *muah*
you gotta take me along when I come back next!
U betcha, girl!
